“Peter Prangnell showed a way to open eyes to an accommodating environment and provide a home for experience. In this way, he immediately confronted fresh students with what we may consider the soul of architecture.Great teachers use their charisma to make their audience fall in love with the subject they teach. That was Peter Prangnell’s true gift.”

Peter Prangnell was a legendary architect and professor who taught at Harvard, Columbia and the University of Toronto, among other institutions. After a groundbreaking reformation of the first year studio program at Columbia University in association with Ray Lifchez, Prangnell was given the opportunity to institute the “New Programme”, the five year B. Arch. course at the University of Toronto. Inspired by thinkers such as Ivan Illich and Aldo Van Eyck, the new curriculum was a radical departure from existing programs that encouraged students to broaden their learning in a variety of ways, challenge received wisdom and come up with practical solutions by addressing “core problems”.
Edited by Roberto Damian, this volume looks back at the impact of his innovative new approach to architectural education fifty years on, featuring texts by and interviews with Prangnell himself as well as a series of contributions from prominent colleagues, mentors and students, each of which offers a new perspective on the great professor’s philosophy and enormous legacy in the world of architecture.
