“Robert Swatt believes there are three key timeless principles of modern residential architecture; connectivity and spatial excitement, a lyrical dialogue between architecture and nature, and connecting family life to nature by bringing the outside in.”

Foreword by Renee Y. Chow
Introduction by Robert Swatt, FAIA
Edited by Oscar Riera Ojeda

In the 50 years since Robert Swatt opened his first firm, he and his partners have designed over 200 residential projects, including 150 custom homes, of which over 125 have been built. These projects have been carried out at unique and challenging sites throughout California, and in Colorado, Nebraska, Hawaii, Canada, India and Spain. In addition to being featured in numerous publications throughout the world, the studio has been honored with over 95 local, national and international awards, including the National Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects. This book celebrates the 50th anniversary of Swatt’s career with a selection of the studio’s work: 50 stunning houses.

Designed from the inside out, the constant threads that pervade these buildings are a strong relationship between the architecture and the land, open planning for informal living, and dissolving the boundary between inside and out—with the common goal of making these homes as beautiful to live in as they are to behold.
